Leading Australia’s next chapter in engineering

What does your role involve?
I joined Haskoning recently as Managing Director in Australia and Director of the advisory group for water and maritime. My role is to help shape the strategic direction of the business and support our people to deliver meaningful outcomes for clients and communities.
One of the big drawcards for me to join the Haskoning team was our purpose, ‘Enhancing Society Together’. My background is environmental science and that focus on protecting communities and making a positive difference has been a big motivator throughout my career.
What has stood out since joining Haskoning is seeing that purpose translated into action. I see ‘Enhancing Society Together’ reflected in the projects we pursue, the decisions we make and the way our people approach complex challenges. It means looking beyond the immediate technical problem and focusing on the long-term outcomes that make a genuine difference for communities.
In my time at Haskoning, I have already been inspired by the work our teams are delivering across Australia and the Pacific.
In Ebeye in the Marshall Islands, our colleagues have worked closely with the local community and key stakeholders to improve climate resilience and adaptation in one of the Pacific’s most remote locations. In Tonga, the team is supporting the development of a bridge specifically designed to provide a rapid evacuation route during tsunami events.
Every day, I’m seeing the team work collaboratively to do work that really makes an impact. We can draw on expertise from our global network, including head office in the Netherlands, while deepening our local capabilities and specialisations.
It’s inspiring to see our people come together to solve complex issues in dynamic environments.
For me, this is also what good leadership looks like. It is not about having every answer yourself. It is about creating the conditions for people with different experiences and expertise to come together, challenge one another and solve complex problems that make a genuine difference.
The real test of partnership is how it responds when things get difficult. Honest communication, clear expectations and collaborative decisions keep everyone focused on solving the problems and the best possible outcome.
