What does your role involve?

I am a Coastal Project Engineer with Haskoning Australia, based in Sydney. My role is to develop practical engineering solutions that help protect vulnerable coastal communities and infrastructure from hazards such as erosion, inundation and sea-level rise.

My work involves designing coastal protection structures, including seawalls and rock revetments, assessing the condition of existing coastal and maritime assets, and coordinating the survey teams that collect information for our designs. Each project requires an understanding of how the coast behaves, what infrastructure is at risk and how people use the surrounding area.

I find the role rewarding because it allows me to contribute to the resilience and long-term future of coastal communities. The work combines technical problem-solving with outcomes that can make a visible difference to the places people depend.

I have always enjoyed problem-solving, working with numbers and thinking outside the box. When I combined that with my love and deep respect for the ocean and the coastline, coastal engineering felt like a natural fit.

Growing up in Western Australia, I was surrounded by some of the world’s most important and beautiful coastal environments. That gave me an early appreciation of how valuable our coastlines are and how important it is to understand and protect them.

What keeps me motivated today in this profession is seeing the real-life impact that your work has on community and society as a whole. Knowing that my work can contribute to those lasting outcomes is one of the most rewarding parts of the profession.

My work in Tuvalu has shown me how practical coastal engineering can make a meaningful difference. Over the next 15 years, I hope to help create resilient solutions that protect communities, infrastructure and the natural environment.
