Connecting communities through maritime design

What does your role involve?
I lead a team of passionate engineers who work across maritime projects throughout Australia and the broader Pacific region. My role moves between day-to-day advice and problem solving with the team on projects through guiding our business operations with strategic direction and identifying opportunities.
Working in the maritime space is such a fascinating discipline because it combines fundamental engineering principles with the challenges of the marine environment. Whether we're designing ports, waterfront developments or shipping channels, our work plays an important role in connecting communities and supporting economic activity. Shipping channels are essentially highways for ships, helping move goods and resources that underpin economies throughout Australia, the Pacific and globally.
As climate change continues to influence the way we design infrastructure, we're also helping clients respond to rising sea levels, improve resilience and extend the life of important maritime assets. Ultimately, I see our role as creating infrastructure that strengthens both economic connectivity and community connection.
One project that had a significant impact on my career was developing a master plan for a port client in South Australia. Unlike many engineering projects where we're brought in to solve a specific technical issue, this project required a broader strategic perspective.
This was the plan for the use of a land parcel adjacent to the existing container terminal that was undeveloped. I visited the site and interviewed a range of internal stakeholders to get their views and feedback on the best uses for the site. I consolidated these viewpoints, alongside my professional expertise, to coordinate the development of master plan options, including the recommendation of a preferred layout for container handling and warehouse development.
What made the project especially rewarding was seeing the recommendations progress beyond a plan. Funding was approved, development moved forward and construction commenced. It demonstrated how a well-considered master plan can unlock the potential of underutilised land and create long-term value.
Enhancing society together means we're having a direct impact on the communities we work in. In the Pacific, we're not just building ports and harbours, we're creating economic opportunities through construction, local capability development and stronger connections between communities.
