Solving complex maritime challenges

Meet Ali Minhas, Technical Director Maritime. His 15 Voices story explores solving complex maritime challenges, building trusted partnerships and applying international experience to deliver practical solutions.
Ali Minhas.

What does your role involve?

As Technical Director Maritime, much of my role involves helping project teams work through complex or unfamiliar engineering challenges. Colleagues often come to me for technical guidance, design reviews or support with decisions that will allow their work to progress.

Every project presents different conditions, constraints and risks, so the right answer is not always immediately obvious. I draw on my experience and work with specialists across the organisation to understand the problem and identify a practical way forward.

I also contribute to proposals, recruitment, team development and making connections with other technical experts. What I enjoy most, however, is the challenge of finding a sound solution to a difficult technical question and helping the team move forward with confidence.

Over my career, I have been fortunate to work on major maritime projects in the UK, the Middle East, Vietnam, Türkiye and Singapore. These have included the Panama Canal locks expansion tender design, a major multi-berth development at Ruwais (Abu Dhabi) and new port infrastructure at Gemalink Cai Mep port in Vietnam.

The projects at Jurong Port in Singapore were particularly significant because they showed me how important collaboration is when addressing a complex engineering challenge. For these project sites difficult ground conditions meant that the proposed pile-installation approach presented technical and construction complexities.

By working closely with the contractor, we were able to combine our wider maritime engineering expertise with their understanding of local conditions and installation methods. This helped the team identify a practical and economical solution.

The experience reinforced my belief that technical excellence produces the best outcome when it is combined with local experience, mutual respect and a shared commitment to the project.

The best solutions come from combining technical expertise with local knowledge and working together with trust, respect and a shared goal.
