Building resilience where people and water meet

What does your role involve?
I'm a Civil Engineer specialising in water resources and coastal engineering, working across Haskoning's Rivers and Water Management and Coastal Engineering teams. Over the past four years my work has involved stormwater management strategies, water quality assessments, detention and bioretention basins, flood levees, riverbank protection, coastal seawalls and environmental assessments.
Put simply, I help communities live safely alongside water. That means understanding where floodwater will go, how to protect homes and infrastructure from it, and how to keep our rivers and coastlines healthy in the process.
A typical day involves working with coastal, environmental and flooding engineers to develop practical solutions for our clients that also benefit local communities and the surrounding environment.
I have always loved the natural environment. In high school, I completed a geography project at my local boating harbor, Bobbin Head, exploring how recreational boating affected water quality and biodiversity in the surrounding mangroves and waterway. That experience showed me that civil and environmental engineering could bring together my interest in nature with work that serves communities.
That motivation has only grown. Today, I might be working on flood barriers for flood-prone communities, coastal protection designed with the environment in mind, or water-quality and drainage improvements in Australia and across the Pacific.
What keeps me motivated is seeing how engineering can make a practical difference to both people and places.

For me, engineering is about helping communities live more safely alongside water, while respecting the rivers and coastlines that shape the places we call home.
