Meet Greg Britton, Technical Director and the founder of Haskoning’s Australian business. His 15 Voices story reflects on five decades in engineering, the importance of technical judgement, long-term partnerships and the people who have shaped the journey.
Coastal construction works on a sandy beach, with excavators and workers installing a rock revetment near the shoreline to support erosion and coastal protection measures.

What does your role involve?

I established Haskoning’s Australian business 15 years ago and have seen the business grow and thrive in that time. I now hold the role of Technical Director which has five key focus areas: winning projects, delivering them, reviewing colleagues’ work, mentoring developing engineers and raising our business’s profile across Australia. All five of those happen pretty much every day.

One thing I have always believed is that senior engineers should remain hands-on. Our clients value being able to speak directly with people who understand both the technical detail and the broader outcomes they are trying to achieve. Our reputation has been built on solving difficult challenges and helping clients find practical solutions that deliver benefits not only for the project, but also for communities and the environment.

My technical philosophy for coastal and maritime engineering is that we need to work with nature not against it. When we understand how coastlines, estuaries and marine environments behave naturally, we're often much closer to finding solutions that work for clients, communities and the environment over the long term. I think that approach now flows through our broader team.

Ultimately, clients come to us for our technical excellence and our ability to solve difficult problems. When it comes to coastal, maritime or environmental issues, our team are the people to speak to and that reputation comes from hard work and continually delivering exceptional results.

One of the defining projects of my career has been the Shell Cove Boat Harbour and Marina. What started as early discussions in the 1990s evolved into the largest boat harbour and marina development on the New South Wales coast and became a project that would span decades of my professional life.

The project was initiated by the NSW Government with the vision to provide safe boating facilities along the coast while supporting economic development in the Illawarra region. Over time, a degraded foreshore was transformed into a vibrant residential, commercial and recreational destination. Along the way, we worked with Shellharbour City Council, developers, regulators and the local community to help bring that vision to life.

Over the period of 2002 to 2022, the project moved from initial idea to completion, with Haskoning involved in the investigation, design, documentation, environmental management plans and approvals, and construction advice for the boatharbour development and a 270 berth marina. This milestone project included multiple engineering and environmental challenges and demonstrated both Haskoning’s technical expertise, but also the value of long-term commitment, collaboration and trust.

I’m proud of our technical excellence and the work that we do, but even more proud of the team we've built and the trusted relationships we've developed with our clients over the years.
