The project entails a campus expansion of 30MW to an existing Tier 4 data centre. The existing hyperscale 20 MW data centre and 10 MW colocation data centre are part of one of the largest campuses in South Africa. Driven by cloud adoption, connectivity proliferation and population growth, Africa’s data centre market experiences extraordinary double-digit growth rates.
Meeting this growing demand requires fast-paced development, which is exactly what was executed throughout this project. With a lead time of 18 months for the project, the replicable design is tailored to the client and reduces time-to-market for this facility and future facilities.
The replicable design can be modularised by our client and rolled out to all facilities in Africa. This tailored and modularised approach ensures a high-performing design, allows for increased levels of cost performance and reduces the time-to-market. Furthermore, all facilities can, as a programme, be cost-efficiently optimised for performance.
As the appointed lead engineer, Haskoning provided full service, from concept and detailed design to construction and commissioning for the new energy-efficient facility in Johannesburg. We led the structural and civil designs as well as the mechanical, electrical, security, control and instrumentation system designs for the new campus. The data centre design includes new office blocks and plant buildings as well.

Our global experience with hyperscale facility design combined with local knowledge and presence, our depth of knowledge of different facility configurations and our full-spectrum engineering services, make Haskoning a unique and technically-optimal partner in the African market.
Sustainable data centres are gradually transforming Africa’s digital landscape, and this project reflects that shift. Sustainability is central to the design, with our global expertise ensuring the highest levels of Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) to maximise energy efficiency. The facility also includes controlled water systems and, apart from the initial charge, operates without requiring additional water.
