We are seeking an experienced and driven professional to manage and oversee the delivery of a diverse range of traffic, active travel, public realm, and highway engineering projects for ITP’s Advisory Group in the UK. You’ll provide technical leadership and project management support across multidisciplinary projects for new and existing clients, developing and maintaining strong client relationships within the sector. We would expect you to have a strong consultancy background, with proven experience of delivering highway design projects, with familiarity of local authority standards, urban constraints, and stakeholder coordination.

As a member of the Integrated Transport Planning (ITP) team within Haskoning, you will work alongside skilled professionals united by a shared passion for vision‑led transport planning, designing sustainable mobility solutions that meet people’s needs and help shape places that reflect the unique character of their local context.

What you will do as an Associate Director

Our Engineering Design team focuses on the design, construction, operation and maintenance of transport systems and structures that support the movement of people and goods. Our design philosophy is rooted in innovation and resilience, and our projects play a critical role in shaping how societies function and grow by ensuring efficient, safe, and sustainable transportation and infrastructure networks.  We would expect you to:

  • Lead the delivery of traffic, active travel, public realm, and highway/infrastructure engineering projects from concept through to detailed design.
  • Act as Project Director and Project Manager, monitoring financial performance and key performance indicators.
  • Review and approve technical designs, drawings, and reports, ensuring compliance with project briefs and UK/regional standards.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to engineers and designers, supporting team skills and professional development.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement in design processes, staying up to date with best practice and emerging technologies.
  • Develop and maintain sound client relationships, identifying and realising new commercial opportunities.
  • Prepare detailed proposals, client briefs, and fee proposals; contribute to or lead bids.
  • Collaborate with other ITP teams and build strong internal relationships within Haskoning’s wider business lines.
  • Participate in professional associations, working groups, or industry forums, and contributing to thought leadership and the advancement of the profession.

What we expect from you

We are seeking a candidate with experience of leading on the delivery of highway and infrastructure design solutions. You will be expected to demonstrate:

  • Experience in Section 278/38 Highway approval submissions.
  • Experience in Active Travel design working with LTN1/20 and projects requiring Active Travel England Liaison.
  • Experience in public realm design, including streetscape enhancements and integration of urban design principles.
  • Strong knowledge of highway design standards and software (e.g. AutoCAD, Civil 3D), and familiarity with BIM processes and 3D modelling tools.
  • Proven ability to lead teams and deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng or equivalent) is highly desirable.
  • A growing network of industry contacts and positive client referrals.

You’ll usually speak with different colleagues than in the first interview, giving you a broad impression of your potential new work environment. Depending on the role, we may ask you to complete an assessment. Sometimes, a third interview is also part of the process.
