Denise Faber is the Director of the Sustainable Mobility team at ITP, an advisory group of Haskoning. With a background in public transport, she brings both strategic vision and a strong sense of purpose to her role. For Denise, leadership is not about titles. It is about creating a culture where everyone feels heard, supported, and inspired to make a difference.

It is like being on a rollercoaster with your family. There are highs and lows, but the support and trust make every challenge worth it.

From strategy to impact

Among the many projects Denise has worked on, her collaboration with Nottinghamshire County Council stands out. She helped develop and deliver their Bus Service Improvement Plan starting in 2021. "The initiative focused on increasing bus usage and raising passenger satisfaction, through various initiatives. What made the project so rewarding, was the level of passion and commitment from the authority and operators to work together to achieve common objectives, and the opportunity to see results in real life."

"In consultancy, it is not uncommon to deliver a plan and then hand it over without seeing the outcome. This project was different. I have stayed closely involved, now chairing the Enhanced Partnership Board that guides implementation. It has allowed me to see the connection between strategy development and real improvements in how people travel. That visibility, and the chance to continue shaping outcomes over time, is something I value deeply."

Building a culture that lasts

Denise has navigated major transitions, including the integration of ITP into Haskoning. Throughout those changes, she has remained focused on maintaining a strong team culture. She credits two colleagues—Neil Taylor and Jim Bradley—for engendering trust, helping her understand her strengths, and helping her build the confidence to lead authentically whilst creating space for others to do the same.

"My goals for the coming year include implementing new systems and practices after the recent restructuring, growing and developing the team’s work in line with the strategic plan, and just as importantly, maintaining a happy, healthy team culture. I believe that when people feel seen and supported, the quality of the work naturally follows."
