The challenge

Our design for a greenfield brewery in East Africa took into account the lack of construction capability in the country to ensure the project was delivered on time and met the necessary quality standards.

The project marked the first production site for our client in the country and we assisted making site assessments for suitable locations and selecting partners for construction, supervision and permitting. Our involvement then extended from master planning and capex estimates to civil procurement, construction management and site supervision.

The solution

Design uses pre-engineered buildings to ensure quality

To ensure a cost-effective service, the preliminary design was undertaken from our global centre of excellence in the Netherlands, while detailed design, tender packs, execution phase and supervision were handled from our regional office in Vietnam.

The key challenge was the lack of capability of local contractors which we mitigated by integrating constructability into our design. This limited the local scope by using pre-engineered structures tendered on international markets and shipped to the site. The local contractor was responsible for earthworks and concrete foundations.

The result

Our greenfield brewery project has achieved success across its growth phases. The strategic use of pre-engineered structures played a pivotal role in this journey. Using these structures, the client was able to ensure a consistent quality across the operation. Furthermore, leveraging pre-engineered components was a cost-effective approach, as international procurement and shipping optimised expenses. This allowed the contractor to focus on essential tasks and even allowed stakeholders to plan further expansions as the project was being constructed.
Now the brewery thrives in its fourth growth phase – a testament to our experience and dedication.
