Haskoning Innovation & Education Fund invests in the future of environmental biotechnology at TU Delft
From the 1st of August, the Haskoning Innovation & Education Fund will finance a five-year Associate Professorship in Environmental Biotechnology at Delft University of Technology. This donation supports academic leadership, education capacity and research that supports cleaner water, circular resource use and more sustainable environmental solutions.
The agreement marks an important next step in the Fund’s commitment to research, innovation and education in climate resilience and water technology. By supporting this position, the Fund helps secure and further develop internationally recognized expertise in Environmental Biotechnology at TU Delft, a field that is directly relevant to today’s water, waste and resource challenges. Environmental biotechnology helps improve wastewater treatment, recover valuable resources from waste, and develop more sustainable solutions for water-related challenges.
The position will be taken forward by Dr. Mario Pronk, who has already worked in this role while being seconded from Haskoning to TU Delft. As of 1 August, he will transfer from Haskoning to TU Delft on a full-time basis, helping ensure continuity of expertise.
Knowledge can make a real difference
For TU Delft the donation supports both continuity and innovation. It strengthens academic leadership in a field with high societal relevance and contributes to education and research capacity within the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
“Environmental biotechnology has an important role to play in making wastewater treatment more sustainable and in recovering valuable resources from what we currently see as waste,” says Mark van Loosdrecht, recently retired Professor of Environmental Biotechnology at Delft University of Technology. “Continuity in this field is essential. I am very pleased to see that the knowledge, education and research we have built up over many years can continue to develop.”
The Haskoning Innovation & Education Fund is established to translate Haskoning’s purpose, Enhancing Society Together, into long-term action. As part of our Strategy Empowering Excellence 2030, each year, 12.5% of Haskoning’s net profit is gifted through the Fund towards global research, innovation and education, with an initial focus on climate resilience and water technology.
