Haskoning Innovation & Education Fund donates to first research project

This project “Sludge to Resource” focuses on identifying bacteria that thrive in heavily polluted anaerobic environments, such as dredging depots. The goal is to explore whether these microorganisms can break down harmful substances or recover reusable raw materials. The Haskoning Innovation & Education Fund signed its first donation of nearly half a million euros to the University Fund Delft to support this independent research at the TU Delft. The contribution enables a scientist to conduct an innovative, multi-year study at the intersection of hydraulic engineering, water technology, and biotechnology. The insights could lead to new technologies that are globally applicable and contribute to a sustainable society.

Find them and make them usable

"Of the estimated one billion species of microbes (microscopic organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and algae) on Earth, 99% have never been studied. This means there are untapped sources of unknown microorganisms and metabolic processes. The challenge is to find them and make them usable!"

Mark van LoosdrechtProfessor of Environmental Biotechnology and Water Treatment at TU Delft

The scientists research will focus on discovering unknown bacterial species and understanding their unique capabilities, think of bacteria that can degrade PFAS, pesticides, or microplastics through a completely natural cleaning process. The research will also explore whether these microorganisms can recover reusable raw materials, such as metals or biopolymers.
