Liquefied natural gas: a growing opportunity for APAC

As fossil fuels are phased out, and renewable energy is phased in, LNG represents a crucial stepping stone. Cleaner than coal and oil it has a stable supply that can be tapped into now while renewable energy sources continue to mature. And it’s a growing market for the Asia–Pacific region.

Several tugboats are assisting the tanker in maneuvering into position at the dock. The water around the ship is a vibrant blue, and the port infrastructure includes multiple piers and docking platforms extending into the water.

According to IGU’s 2025 World LNG Report, APAC remained the largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporting region in 2024, with 138.9 MT exported. This is a 4.1 MT increase from 2023 and shows a trend that isn’t slowing down.

As the LNG market continues to grow, so does the demand for specialist facilities that can facilitate its transportation and distribution. And that means expanding existing LNG facilities and developing new maritime infrastructure.

Liquefied natural gas presents its own unique challenges

LNG development projects are complex, particularly in APAC where you’re already feeling the impact of climate change. You need to create resilient facilities that can withstand waves, currents, and storms as these threats grow further – and have a minimal negative impact on the environment so you don’t exacerbate the problem.

LNG itself is also hazardous and extremely flammable. It needs appropriate facilities that comply with safety regulations and adequately reduce risk to assets and people.

When projects have this many moving parts, collaboration is key

Because of their complexity, LNG projects require multiple specialists working well together. At Haskoning, we deeply value collaboration. We’re adept at working in multi-disciplinary teams and work with partners – and we always make stakeholder engagement a priority in every project we’re involved in.

As global leaders in maritime facility design and optimisation, we work within environmental and regulatory constraints to create productive and efficient facilities that meet performance objectives.

Our work is underpinned by cutting edge technology, like our LNG Logistics Simulator, to enable risk free testing of different design features. And our Smart Mooring solution, which applies real-time weather and metocean forecasts to support efficient, safe mooring.

A partnership with Haskoning is a partnership for success

Our combination of technical expertise and deep domain experience make us a recognised partner for LNG projects – from the initial stages of an LNG journey to maintaining and optimising facilities that are already up and running.

Regardless of your project’s maturity, we can create high-value solutions tailored to your needs. These include navigation channels for safe access, breakwaters that improve operability at the berth, dredging plans for construction and operations, and cutting-edge mooring arrangement design and technology.

We’re ready to help you seize the LNG opportunity

Our extensive experience in the maritime sector combined with our deep understanding of APACs specific challenges – and available opportunities – make us a leading partner for LNG projects in the region.
