Serious game for nature-based solutions: Engreeneering

Improve your decision-making with the NBS Engreeneering game
Will you prioritise budget, nature, or citizens’ needs?
In the fictional “Valley Town”, demand for housing has increased. You must make choices about developing a greenfield area close to a river and nature reserve. Base decisions on three criteria – cost, satisfaction, and nature – and see the impacts and ROI of each choice over the next 5 and 25 years.

Ongoing game experimentation and evolution
Population growth and climate change pose some tough decisions for professionals working in urbanisation environments with multiple stakeholders.
How can they provide enough homes within the available budget to meet the needs of a growing population while protecting local biodiversity and infrastructure for decades to come?
Many of these challenges can be answered by nature-based solutions (NBS). It’s a sustainable approach to today’s socio-ecological challenges – creating climate-resilient urban environments by incorporating natural processes into design and construction.
To increase the awareness of this relatively new approach among decision-makers, our young engineers from our Digital Talent Program have come up with the NBS Engreeneering game.

This game allows key stakeholders to see the short- and long-term impact of their decisions on citizens, budgets, and ecosystems as well as the benefits of nature-based solutions and ROI.
