In the fictional “Valley Town”, demand for housing has increased. You must make choices about developing a greenfield area close to a river and nature reserve. Base decisions on three criteria – cost, satisfaction, and nature – and see the impacts and ROI of each choice over the next 5 and 25 years.

This open-source simulation game was created by our Young International Talents as part of the Digital Talent Program. It’s just one of many opportunities for young engineers at Haskoning, where we adopt Digital Way of Working (DWoW) approaches to our work.

Increasing awareness of nature-based solutions

By encouraging players to earn points for better decision-making, the NBS Engreeneering game shows the short and long-term benefits of nature-based solutions for the local population, budget, and ecosystems. As a result, it increases awareness of NBS among decision-makers and other municipality stakeholders in a fun way.

Ongoing game experimentation and evolution

Alongside an application for DWoW funding, we are committed to enhancing our game to achieve greater impact. The next phase will include more choices and expand the decision-making process with different steps. It will also show the instant impact of each decision, as well the effects over up to 25 years.

Population growth and climate change pose some tough decisions for professionals working in urbanisation environments with multiple stakeholders.
How can they provide enough homes within the available budget to meet the needs of a growing population while protecting local biodiversity and infrastructure for decades to come?

Many of these challenges can be answered by nature-based solutions (NBS). It’s a sustainable approach to today’s socio-ecological challenges – creating climate-resilient urban environments by incorporating natural processes into design and construction.

To increase the awareness of this relatively new approach among decision-makers, our young engineers from our Digital Talent Program have come up with the NBS Engreeneering game.
