Shore power consultancy

As the world looks to reduce emissions, shore power gives the port and shipping industry an unmissable opportunity to decrease harmful emissions while vessels are at port. And at Haskoning, we’re dedicated to helping you seize it.

Shore power system at quay Port of Hamburg

Environmental awareness is continuing to rise. Port authorities, terminal operators, ship owners and other stakeholders are looking for ways to reduce emissions across the supply chain. Port electrification offers a crucial opportunity to reduce port emissions, both to increase peoples’ health as well as to reduce climate impact.

As regulations tighten, the shipping industry will be subject to more restrictions to using their generators in port. Shore power, or cold ironing, is a way to power ships in port without needing to run their diesel-powered on-board generators. Instead, vessels are connected to an onshore power supply.

At Haskoning, we have deep experience in sustainable energy projects and the maritime market, successfully consulting on port developments, feasibility assessments, dedicated design, and more. We bring our cross-sector expertise together to help facilitate the use of sustainable marine fuels and support the decarbonisation of shipping with onshore power solutions.

As part of that, we provide industry-leading shore power solutions and advice for how best to connect ships to the public power grid, considering the specific interests and challenges of our client and stakeholders.

  • Port authorities need to ensure the shore power system is well integrated, grid connected, operational and used, seeking for an improved port environment and limited impact on port operations.
  • Terminal operators want to minimise the impact on terminal logistics against efficient use of capital and operational expenditure when providing shore power.
  • Ship owners need easy-to-connect and working systems that support current and future vessels.

You get support throughout the entire project cycle. This includes project identification, technical and commercial feasibility, detailed design, tendering, and construction supervision from the world’s leading consultant in shore-to-ship power connections within the port sector.

During the initial phases, we deliver expert guidance on how to balance the benefits of shore power – based on the maritime traffic to your port - with an estimated required initial investment level.

We’ll analyse your projects financial and economic feasibility and assess the advantages of emissions reduction specific to your situation – including CO2 and noise reduction and air quality improvement.

With 20 years of shore power experience and over 1,000 shore power connections achieved worldwide, we have a proven track record delivering successful and transformational projects.

Our technical support covers every element of shore power connections including:

  • Ship connection systems, such as outlet sockets and cable management systems
  • Switchgear, including protective devices
  • Metering of power consumption
  • Automated payment systems
  • Power supply and internal distribution infrastructure
  • Transformers, converters, and grid connections
