The challenge: executing a world-leading sustainable development precinct
Australia’s Northern Territory Government plans to create a modern industrial precinct to grow the economy. In a world first, the Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct (MASDP) will be largely powered by renewables. It will use sustainable and responsible renewable energy production and technology to achieve low emissions and a circular economy.
The proposed MASDP project covers roughly 1500 hectares. Middle Arm Peninsula is already home to the Santos Darwin LNG and the INPEX Ichthys LNG processing facilities. Both companies are committed to net zero emissions including planned carbon capture and storage projects.
The aim is to attract future-focussed industries like liquified natural gas, hydrogen, methanol, and ammonia – as well as carbon capture, utilisation, and storage.
The solution: expert support to bring the MASDP vision to life
To progress the project, Haskoning was given a key engineering, design, planning, and environmental approval advisory role, acting as a fundamental source of specialist support.
The company's involvement has spanned early feasibility studies, strategic environmental assessments, and concept design work, including:
- Port master planning
- Technical advisory services
- Fleet profiling and marine traffic assessment
- Marine infrastructure design development
- Nautical studies and navigation risk assessment
- Geophysical and geotechnical site investigations
- Dredging and reclamation
- Hydrodynamic modelling
- Marine environmental studies and approvals
We are proud to have finalised the concept design for the Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct, which will create new jobs and opportunities for the region while accelerating the transition to renewable energy.
The result: an economic boost to benefit the entire community
Once complete, the MASDP will provide thousands of new job opportunities for the region while boosting renewable energy generation and use – accelerating the energy transition.
Revenue from the precinct will also be invested back into the region, enhancing healthcare, residential, and education facilities and improving the lives and livelihoods of those in the local community.
