A sea level monitoring project launches in the Pitcairn Islands

Enhancing the islands for people and nature, long term
The technical delivery of the project is being supported by Haskoning, which is responsible for designing and implementing the long-term sea level monitoring system, as well as the seabed mapping activities.
The specialist team from Haskoning brings extensive expertise in water management and climate resilience and deep experience working in remote and complex environments to the project.
Our understanding of practical, data-driven coastal management solutions informed the design and implementation of the sea level monitoring system and enabled us to conduct enhanced seabed mapping and analysis. The remote sea level monitoring system and robust seabed mapping supports safe and fuel-efficient mooring in Bounty Bay and Tedside.
They will strengthen the Pitcairn Islands’ long-term resilience and improve local preparedness for coastal hazards. And they will provide valuable information for global climate change research networks, improving collective understanding of sea level rise and its impacts.
“Strengthening climate resilience in small island territories requires reliable data and strong partnerships,” explains Ahab Downer, Director of the Green Overseas Programme. “This project reflects our commitment to supporting Pitcairn with robust technical solutions that are designed to deliver long-term value.”
In addition, dedicated mooring points will enable ships to reduce fuel use, lowering emissions and minimising seabed damage from anchoring.
Torika Cristian, External Group Manager from the Government of the Pitcairn Islands says “For Pitcairn, safe maritime access and informed coastal planning are essential. The installation of a permanent monitoring system will provide important information for our community and help guide future decisions.”
This project is protecting Pitcairn’s unique marine ecosystem, supporting sustainable island logistics, and positioning the islands as a model for low carbon, environmentally responsible innovation.

Being involved in projects that champion innovative and sustainable practices is always a pleasure. I look forward to the long-term benefits for the Pitcairn Islands and how this work influences future projects.
