Three ways ports can harness nature to deliver even more value

Ports are under growing pressure to operate efficiently and sustainably. Nature-based solutions offer a dynamic, responsive, and cost-effective solution to several port governance and development challenges. But how exactly do they fit into port environments and infrastructure?

Ports have a broad range of responsibilities – and need a broad set of solutions

Today’s ports have a wide range of challenges. No longer just focused on logistics and cargo throughput, modern port authorities and terminal operators are increasingly aware of their social responsibilities and environmental impact to maintain their license to operate and attract continued investment.

The impacts of climate change are also growing, and as sea-level rise, waves, coastal dynamics and erosion become more extreme, those conditions can increase downtime and have financial consequences.

For instance, the safety and efficiency of navigation and vessel loading/unloading can be severely affected unless port and terminal operators can dampen these increasingly extreme conditions.

As the challenges facing ports grow, the solutions they lean on must grow as well.

We’ve written previously about nature-based solutions (NbS) and how they can solve major societal challenges like urban congestion and flooding. They also have significant application in solving three of the major responsibilities facing modern port authorities and terminal operators.

Below, we’ll explore these three responsibilities and look at the main types of NbS that can help port and terminal operators navigate them.

Learn more about how nature-based solutions can enhance port operations

As port and terminal operators come under more pressure to improve efficiency, operate sustainably, and offset increasingly volatile weather conditions and wave dynamics, nature-based solutions can augment traditional solutions.

Just as nature-based approaches are helping inland communities improve biodiversity and offset the impacts of climate change, they can bring similar benefits to ports – while simultaneously solving traditional port challenges around operational efficiency and maintenance.

This blog has covered a handful of NbS that help solve some of the most pressing challenges facing ports. But there’s much more to consider.

You can learn more in this report, written by the EcoShape consortium in collaboration with the World Bank.

Or, if you have more specific questions about your port’s challenges and appropriate NbS, please get in touch with out experts.

With teams specialising in NbS, biodiversity, maritime, and legislation – and an ambition to support projects that enrich local ecosystems – we can help apply new concepts from other disciplines to solve your most pressing challenges.

As our climate continues to change, it’s imperative that we find ways to protect the environments we live in, the ecosystems we depend on, and the habitats that support us. At Haskoning, we’ve been using the power of nature to make the world safer and more sustainable for years. Working with and alongside nature is a big part of our mission to enhance society together – and we’d love you to be a part of it.
