About our Maritime Business

Haskoning is at the forefront of international maritime planning, design, and development. Our global Maritime team is over 600‑strong, comprising multi‑disciplinary experts who deliver ports, shipyards, dry docks, and maritime infrastructure projects across five continents.

Role Context

This role is suited to an experienced Graduate Engineer or Senior Civil / Structural Maritime Engineer seeking the next step in their career, with the opportunity to work on both regionally and globally significant projects.

You will be part of the Glasgow Maritime Team, led by our Associate Director, and embedded within the wider Maritime Arch Henderson Advisory Group across five UK offices. The team works closely with colleagues across Haskoning’s international network of over 6,000 professionals in more than 30 countries.

The role will see you applying your technical and practical expertise to the development of engineering solutions for maritime civil engineering structures within ports and shipyards, using steel, concrete, timber, and other materials in accordance with relevant design codes.

You will contribute across all stages of project delivery — from feasibility and concept development, through detailed design and construction, to demolition, recycling, and reuse — with appropriate support and technical oversight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare designs for maritime and associated structures, from initial concept development through to detailed design
  • Produce design calculations and reports, and check and review calculations prepared by others
  • Prepare sketch drawings and technical details for CAD production, and review drawings prior to issue
  • Assist in the preparation of specifications, Bills of Quantities, and construction contract documentation
  • Undertake inspections and condition surveys, including preparation of technical reports
  • Provide sound engineering judgement and technical advice
  • Support the management and technical direction of projects, commensurate with experience
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to graduates and junior engineers
  • Contribute to the commercial and technical delivery of projects, supporting profitable outcomes
  • Work collaboratively within project teams and across disciplines

Required Skills and Experience

  • BSc/BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng MICE / IStructE) or working towards Chartered status
  • Experience in the planning and design of maritime works and/or heavy civil engineering projects
  • Experience in reinforced concrete design and structural steelwork design;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Pragmatic problem‑solver, able to develop robust solutions collaboratively
  • Proven technical capability and developing design leadership
  • Collaborative team player within a dynamic, multi‑disciplinary environment
  • Commercial awareness appropriate to role and experience
  • Personable, approachable, and able to build strong relationships across teams

Desirable

  • Familiarity with finite element analysis
  • Experience in the development of port or shipyard infrastructure, such as heavy‑duty quays, dry docks, or dock gates
  • Willingness to undertake occasional travel within the UK and overseas

Location

You will be based in our Glasgow office, hybrid working is possible, however there is a desire for a minimum of 3 days working in the office.  If you are happy to regularly commute regionally and nationally our offices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Liverpool or London are also a possibility.
