About our Maritime Business
Haskoning is at the forefront of international maritime planning, design, and development. Our global Maritime team is over 600‑strong, comprising multi‑disciplinary experts who deliver ports, shipyards, dry docks, and maritime infrastructure projects across five continents.
We are recognised as one of the largest and most experienced port, shipyard, and dry dock consultancies globally, and are world leaders in the production of feasibility studies, master plans, and detailed designs. From our UK Maritime offices, we lead major shipyard and naval infrastructure projects in close collaboration with colleagues worldwide.

- Design of a lock for a new port in India
- Design of one of the world’s largest and most technically advanced shipyards in the Middle East, incorporating three dry docks over an area exceeding 1,000 hectares

Role Context
This role is suited to an experienced Senior or Principal Civil / Structural Maritime Engineer seeking the next step in their career, working on both regionally and globally significant projects.
You will be part of the Glasgow Maritime Team led by our Associate Director, within the wider Maritime Arch Henderson Advisory Group across five UK offices. The team works closely with colleagues across Haskoning’s international network of over 6,000 professionals in more than 30 countries.
The role will see you applying your technical and practical expertise to the development of engineering solutions for maritime civil engineering structures within ports and shipyards, using steel, concrete, timber, and other materials in accordance with relevant design codes.
You will contribute across all stages of project delivery — from feasibility and concept development, through detailed design and construction, to demolition, recycling, and reuse. Strong technical leadership, commercial awareness, and collaboration with multi‑disciplinary teams will be central to your success.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and lead designs and analyses for maritime and associated structures for ports and shipyards
- Collect, review, and interpret design and site data
- Lead and undertake inspections and condition surveys
- Produce, check, and review design calculations and reports
- Review models and drawings prior to issue
- Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and supervision to junior engineers, technicians, and project managers
- Act as Project Manager for small to medium projects, or Technical Manager on larger or more complex projects
- Prepare Bills of Quantities, specifications, and contract documentation
- Present technical information to clients and internal audiences
- Apply sound engineering judgement and provide expert advice
- Maintain commercial awareness to deliver projects profitably, on programme, and to agreed quality standards
- Contribute to business development through proposal preparation, client engagement, and strengthening existing client relationships
- Support continuous improvement of technical standards and ways of working
Required Skills and Experience
- Chartered Engineer with a relevant institution such as ICE or IStructE
- Proven ability to lead design and analysis work with minimal supervision
- Experience delivering designs from concept through to construction
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with confidence presenting to clients and stakeholders
- Pragmatic problem‑solver, able to develop robust solutions independently and collaboratively
- Well organised, with a disciplined and structured approach to work
- Commercially aware, with an understanding of project delivery and client expectations
- Personable, approachable, and able to build strong relationships across teams and with clients
Desireable
- Demonstrate experience in the development of port or shipyard infrastructure, such as heavy‑duty quays, dry docks, or dock gates
- Demonstrate commitment to training of junior staff e.g. as SCE / DE within an ICE training scheme.
- Willingness to undertake occasional travel within the UK and overseas

You will be based in our Glasgow office, hybrid working is possible, however there is a desire for a minimum of 3 days working in the office. If you are happy to regularly commute regionally and nationally our offices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Liverpool or London are also a possibility.
