Discover the world as a maritime economist

The maritime sector encompasses far more than just ports. Maria, a Maritime Consultant at Haskoning, focuses on this multifaceted sector within the economics department. "It's a shame that not many people know what working in this sector is like," she says. "You discover the world, help clients solve complex challenges, and prepare for the future of their business.

Financial models and strategic choices

Maria's work as a Maritime Economist focuses largely on financial models, commercial market studies, and due diligence, including forecasting. "An example of our work is undertaking due diligence for a client wishing to invest in a port. We evaluate the port and the market in which it operates from a commercial point of view," she explains. "Based on this analysis, we can support our clients in making important strategic decisions."

Global projects, from ports to energy transition

Maria has traveled extensively for her work, to countries such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Mauritius. “Traveling is always a great opportunity to spend time talking to clients and better understand their needs, but you also get to know more about the country and the local culture—that's what makes it so much fun.”

Maria's team has worked on several projects, such as developing a financial model and providing tender support for a multi-terminal transaction, conducting a feasibility study for a marina in Wales and assessing its potential impact on the local community, and performing financial modeling and cost-benefit analyses to assess the feasibility of implementing onshore power in ports. This would help reduce fossil fuel emissions from vessels while they are at berth.

Looking forward, Maria is excited about energy transition projects. "This is a major challenge for the industry, and our team has been increasingly involved in this area. I am happy to be able to contribute to projects that could lead to wider positive environmental or social outcomes.

Client Focus, Teamwork, and Numbers

"We're a close-knit team," says Maria. “We challenge each other, celebrate successes, and always make time for fun, no matter where we are in the world. Our work combines rigorous analysis and reporting with a client-centric approach, where we build strong relationships and collaborate closely with our clients. That combination, along with the supportive working atmosphere and healthy work-life balance, makes our work truly special.”

Forget the stereotypes. Beyond the ships and docks, the maritime sector is brimming with unexpected opportunities for women to excel, lead, and shape the future of a global industry. It's a dynamic and challenging sector with a global impact, where economists like Maria play an important role.
