Henry ForganMaritime Consultant

From a small team in a big company to a big team in a smaller company

“The first consultancy firm I worked for was a big one, with over 30,000 employees globally and several maritime teams spread worldwide. Our team in the UK consisted of a lot of senior experts, and I was privileged to work on a wide range of projects from port masterplan studies to asset inspections and detailed design. I was increasingly working on more and more international projects, which involved travelling to several project sites and one-on-one’s with clients.”

“When I joined Maritime team at Haskoning I joined a larger team, albeit in a smaller organisation. This introduced me to a significant number of passionate specialists and experts. Through close connection with the Smart and Green Ports teams I have been able to focus on incorporating Smart and Green Port elements into typical port planning projects, supporting positive change in the sector through the solutions we develop.”

A varied range of projects

“At Haskoning, I’m involved in quite a range of projects. I mostly focus on smart ports and port planning projects, using my previous experience to bring a high-level overview into projects and working with a range of specialists to embed their expert knowledge into the port planning projects I undertake. In the projects in undertake I typically look more at the bigger picture. What I love about my work is the variety in projects. Not only does every project have different requirements but through the international nature of my work I am exposed to a wide range of clients and cultures.”

An international scope

The maritime team works on projects all over the world. “I work mostly on international projects. For example, a project in Gabon where we have undertaken a site selection and port planning study, but also container terminal stimulations for a terminal in New Zealand where we were looking at automation options. Whilst a lot of our work has moved online, there is still the need to visit clients to get a first-hand appreciation of their operations.”

A knowledgeable and diverse team

“All those passionate people in our organisation make it exciting to be a part of it. Whenever you have a challenging problem, everyone is willing to talk about it and help. You can learn from each other and go the extra mile together. Besides that, our maritime team is very diverse. We have people with a lot of different backgrounds. Ranging from colleagues from the Netherlands and the UK to colleagues from Greece, Spain and Argentina. So, not only are the projects international, but the team is as well. This means that the communication in our team is generally in English, which makes everyone feel included.”
