On our way to net-zero
Accelerating to net-zero in our global operations
In 2021, we have accelerated our climate reduction ambitions to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions within our global operations by 2030 for scope 1 and 2 and by 2050 for scope 3 compared to a 2019 baseline. In August 2022, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approved our near- (2030) and long-term (2050) science based reduction targets following the Net-Zero Standard.
Our net-zero commitment will reduce scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions in line with the Science Based Targets initiative supporting the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5° C compared to pre-industrial levels. To track progress on our science-based targets we are following the GHG-protocol and ISO14064 international standard. We report at least annually on our progress via our Annual Report and on this webpage. Furthermore, we share our progress and environmental information via the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
Measuring the impact of AI
Since 2025, we have been measuring the CO₂ emissions for our use of AI and cloud services, which currently represents around 1% of Haskoning’s total annual footprint. These emissions are calculated using server data for Azure and M365 services, combined with the average number of prompts per employee per year. Dashboard data for our AI and cloud services show that almost all our servers use almost exclusively certified renewable power.While the impact of AI on our emissions is relatively small compared to, for example, other categories like travel, we remain mindful of our use of digital tools and choose the most sustainable way of working. As Haskoning, we want to set an example, not only by setting ambitious net-zero targets, but also by making thoughtful decisions that reflect our purpose of Enhancing Society Together.
